Template Setup Guide

Everything you need to customize your FoxAura Showit template, add your content, and get your website ready to launch.

Getting Started

Let’s get you set up.

Before you start customizing your template, take a few minutes to gather what you'll need. You don't have to have everything ready before you begin, but having your brand and content prepared will make the process much smoother.

01 — Gather your content

Have your logo, brand colors and fonts, website copy, and images or portfolio ready. Missing something? That's okay. You can update your content as you go.

02 — Create your Showit account

You'll need a Showit account to access and customize your template. If you're new to Showit, create your account before installing your design.

03 — Add your template

Use the Share Key included with your purchase to add your FoxAura template to your Showit account. Once it's installed, you're ready to start customizing.

Customize Your Template

Make it yours.

Now comes the fun part: bringing your brand to life. For the smoothest customization process, I recommend working through your template in the following order.

01 — Gather your brand assets

Before you begin customizing, gather your brand materials in one place so they're easy to reference as you work.

✓ Logo files (transparent PNG format recommended)
✓ Brand fonts
✓ Color palette + hex codes
✓ Icons or other brand elements
✓ Favicon

02 — Update your colors + fonts

Start by updating your site-wide styles in Showit's Design Settings. Setting your colors, fonts, and text styles first will help you quickly bring the entire template in line with your brand.

A QUICK NOTE — Some text or design elements may have been styled individually rather than using the site-wide styles, so they may need to be updated manually. Changing fonts can also affect line breaks, spacing, and layouts. Once you've updated your styles, review each page and make any necessary adjustments.

03 — Add your website copy

I recommend writing your website copy outside of Showit first. This allows you to organize your content more clearly, work through your messaging without distractions, and easily reference each section while customizing your site.

A HELPFUL APPROACH — Copy the existing template text into a document, then write your own content directly beneath it. This makes it easier to keep track of where your content belongs when you're ready to add it to your site.

COPY TIPS

✓ Keep your content clear and concise
✓ Focus on your audience and their needs
✓ Make sure each page clearly communicates what you do
✓ Who your services are for
✓ What makes your business different
✓ What you want visitors to do next

UPDATING YOUR TEXT

Click directly on any text in Showit to edit it, then replace the placeholder content with your own copy.

04 — Add + optimize your images

Before uploading your images, I recommend gathering all of your media in one place for easy access.

UPDATING YOUR IMAGES

To replace an image in your template:

  1. Select the image you want to replace. Its settings will appear in the right-hand toolbar.

  2. For a background image, open the Canvas Background tab and select the image thumbnail.

  3. For a regular image, open the Image tab and select Swap Image.

  4. Upload your new image or choose one from your Media Library.

IMAGE GUIDELINES

For a good balance between image quality and site speed, aim for:

✓ Hero images: 300–500 KB
✓ Standard images: 150–300 KB
✓ Smaller images: under 150 KB

Avoid uploading very large files, as they can slow down your site.

These values are intended as a general guideline. Use your judgment to find the right balance between image quality and file size, keeping in mind that larger files may impact load speed.

COMPRESSION

Lightly compress your images before uploading to help improve site speed. You can use a tool like TinyPNG or Squoosh.

Avoid over-compressing your images, as this can noticeably reduce image quality.

ALT TEXT

As you add each image, add descriptive alt text in the Image settings in the right-hand toolbar. Doing this as you go will save you from having to go back through every image later.

Alt text describes the content of an image for visitors using screen readers and can also help search engines understand your images, supporting both accessibility and SEO.

Keep it brief and describe what is actually shown in the image.
Example: Couple walking through a field at sunset

Avoid keyword stuffing or adding information that isn't relevant to the image.

FILE NAMES

Rename your images before uploading using clear, descriptive file names. Descriptive file names give search engines additional context about your images and can support your site's SEO.

For example:

modern-living-room-design.jpg

rather than:

IMG_4829.jpg

IMAGE QUALITY

✓ Use high-resolution, well-lit images
✓ Avoid stretching small images to fit large spaces
✓ If an image appears blurry, try using a larger version

05 — Customize the design

Once your branding, copy, and images are in place, you can begin refining the design to better fit your content and brand.

At this stage, you can:

✓ Adjust layouts
✓ Modify spacing
✓ Update styling details
✓ Personalize sections as needed

A QUICK NOTE — I recommend making these changes after adding your content so you can design around your actual copy and images rather than the template placeholders.

06 — Check your mobile design

Mobile layouts are edited separately from desktop in Showit. As you customize your template, remember to review the mobile version of each page and make adjustments as needed.

✓ Review spacing and alignment
✓ Check text size and readability
✓ Make sure images display properly
✓ Check that buttons and links are easy to use
✓ Review each page before publishing

WORKFLOW TIP — For a smoother editing experience, I recommend updating one section at a time on desktop, then switching to mobile to adjust that same section before moving on. This helps you catch spacing and layout issues early, maintain consistency between desktop and mobile, and avoid having to revisit your entire site later.

Site Setup

Get the details in place.

Once your content and design are in place, take a few minutes to update the functional details of your site. These small but important steps will make sure everything works properly before you move on to SEO and launch prep.

01 — Update your navigation + links

Review the navigation and links throughout your template and update them to point to the correct pages or destinations.

Be sure to check:

✓ Main navigation links
✓ Buttons and calls to action
✓ Footer links
✓ Social media links
✓ Email or external website links

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Preview your site and click through your navigation, buttons, and other links to make sure everything leads where it should.

02 — Set up + test your forms

Your template includes a contact form that can be customized to fit your business. Before launching, review each field and update the labels or information you want visitors to provide.

Make sure your form includes:

✓ A name field with Required and In Subject enabled
✓ An email field with Required and Reply To enabled
✓ A message field set to Required
✓ A submit button with Submit Contact Form enabled
✓ A confirmation or thank-you message after the form is submitted

WHERE YOUR INQUIRIES GO

Showit's built-in forms send submissions to the email address associated with your Showit account. Make sure the email address on your account is one you regularly monitor for inquiries.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Publish your site and submit a test inquiry yourself. Make sure the form submits successfully, your confirmation message appears, and the inquiry arrives in your email.

NOT RECEIVING YOUR INQUIRIES?

Check your spam folder and add noreply@showit.co to your contacts. You can also view recent contact form submissions from the Messages area of your Showit account.

03 — Update your site details

Before moving on, update the remaining site-wide details with your own business information.

FAVICON

Your favicon is the small icon that appears beside your site name in a browser tab. Create a 32 × 32 px square PNG, then add it under Site Settings → Site Information → Favicon. Publish your site after updating it to see the change.

Quick Note Your favicon may take up to 24 hours to update in browsers that have previously visited your site.

SOCIAL LINKS

Add your social media profile URLs under Site Settings → Social. These can be connected to social icons and links throughout your template.

BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Do one final review for any remaining template information or placeholder content that still needs to be replaced with your own.

Blog

Set up your blog.

Showit blogs are powered by WordPress. Your blog design lives in Showit, while your posts and blog content are managed through WordPress.

If you plan to use the blog included with your template, you'll need to set it up before you begin publishing posts.

01 — Set up your Showit blog

Showit will connect WordPress to your website so you can manage your blog content while keeping the design you've customized in Showit.

Because blog setup varies depending on your Showit subscription and whether you're starting a new blog or migrating an existing one, follow Showit's instructions to get your blog connected.

02 — Customize your blog templates

Your FoxAura template includes pre-designed blog templates that control how your blog looks once it's connected to WordPress.

The two main templates you'll see are:

BLOG — This is your main blog page and displays a list or preview of your published posts.

SINGLE POST — This controls the layout used for your individual blog posts. You only need one Single Post template; WordPress automatically fills it with the content from each post you publish.

You can customize the colors, fonts, images, spacing, and other design details in these templates just like the rest of your site.

A QUICK NOTE — Blog templates contain special WordPress placeholders for things like your post title, date, featured image, excerpt, and post content. You can customize how these elements look, but be careful not to remove or change their WordPress placeholder settings, as these settings tell Showit where to display your blog content.

SEO Setup

Help people find you.

Search engine optimization (SEO) helps search engines understand your website and can improve how your pages appear in search results.

Before launching, take some time to review the basic SEO settings throughout your site.

01 — Add page titles + meta descriptions

Each page of your website should have its own page title and meta description. These help search engines understand what the page is about and may be used when your site appears in search results.

In Showit, you can update these under Page Settings → SEO Settings for each page.

TIPS

✓ Give each page a unique, descriptive title
✓ Write a clear description of what visitors will find on the page
✓ Include relevant keywords naturally when they make sense
✓ Avoid leaving any template or placeholder SEO text in place

02 — Review your heading structure

Headings help organize your content and give both visitors and search engines a clearer understanding of your page.

Your FoxAura template has been built with a heading structure already in place. As you replace, add, or rearrange content, try to maintain that structure.

✓ Use one primary H1 heading for the main topic of the page
✓ Use H2 headings for major sections
✓ Use H3 headings for subsections when needed
✓ Keep headings descriptive and relevant to the content that follows

A QUICK NOTE — Don't choose heading tags based on how you want the text to look. Heading tags define the structure of your content, while your text styles control its visual appearance.

03 — Review your SEO settings

Before moving on, review the SEO settings for each page and make sure you've replaced any remaining template information with your own.

✓ Page title added
✓ Meta description added
✓ Heading structure reviewed
✓ Image alt text added
✓ Image file names updated where applicable
✓ No placeholder/template SEO content remains

PREPARE TO LAUNCH

Almost ready to go live.

Before you publish your website, take some time to review everything one last time, connect your domain, and make sure your site is ready for visitors.

01 — Do a final site review

Before launching, preview your finished website and check each page carefully.

✓ Make sure all placeholder text and images have been replaced
✓ Review your site on both desktop and mobile
✓ Test your navigation, buttons, and links
✓ Submit a test inquiry through your contact form
✓ Review your page titles and meta descriptions
✓ Check for spelling errors or missing information

WORKFLOW TIP — Don't rely only on Showit's built-in preview. Open your preview link in a browser and review your site on multiple screen sizes and, when possible, an actual phone or tablet.

02 — Connect your domain

When you're ready to launch, you'll need to connect your domain to your Showit website. The exact process depends on where your domain is registered, so I recommend following Showit's current instructions for connecting your domain.

BEFORE YOU START — Make sure you have access to the account where your domain is registered. You'll need this to update your domain settings during the connection process.

USING A SHOWIT BLOG? — If your Showit subscription includes a blog, follow Showit's blog setup or migration instructions before making changes to your DNS records.

03 — Publish + check your live site

Once your domain is connected and you're ready to go live, publish your website from Showit.

After publishing, visit your live website and do one final check to make sure everything is working as expected.

✓ Open each page of your site
✓ Test your navigation, buttons, and links
✓ Submit one final test through your contact form
✓ Check your site on both desktop and mobile
✓ Confirm your domain loads correctly and securely with https://

A QUICK NOTE — If you've made changes after publishing, remember to publish your site again for those updates to appear on your live website.

04 — Connect Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool that helps you monitor how your website appears in Google Search and identify any issues that may affect your site's visibility.

Once your site is live, connect it to Google Search Console so Google can discover and begin indexing your website.

AFTER CONNECTING

Submit your Showit sitemap (yourdomain.com/siteinfo.xml) in Search Console to help Google discover the pages on your site. You can also use Google's URL Inspection tool to check whether individual pages have been indexed and request indexing when needed.

A QUICK NOTE — Connecting Search Console or requesting indexing doesn't guarantee that your site will appear in search results immediately. It can take time for Google to crawl and index a new website.
